Ingredients

For the Sauce

  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
  • Juice of 1 lime about 2 tablespoons
  • 1 clove garlic grated or finely minced
  • 1 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger

For the Chicken

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons turmeric powder
  • ½ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 4 tablespoons canola oil

Other Ingredients

  • 1 bunch asparagus about 1 pound, ends trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the honey garlic sauce

  • In a small mixing bowl, combine the honey, low-sodium soy sauce, freshly squeezed lime juice, grated garlic, black pepper, and ground ginger.
  • Stir until the honey is fully incorporated and the sauce is smooth. Set aside while you prepare the chicken.

Step 2: Season and coat the chicken

  • In a medium bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, turmeric powder, kosher salt, and black pepper.
  • Add the cubed chicken breast and toss until every piece is evenly coated with the seasoned flour mixture.
  • The turmeric will give the chicken its beautiful golden color, while the flour helps create a lightly crisp exterior.

Step 3: Cook the chicken

  • Heat the canola oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Once the oil is hot, add the coated chicken pieces in an even layer.
  • Cook for approximately 5 minutes, turning occasionally, until the chicken develops a golden exterior.
  • Avoid overcrowding the skillet. If necessary, cook the chicken in two batches to encourage even browning.
  • The chicken should reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) before serving.

Step 4: Add the asparagus

  • Add the trimmed asparagus pieces to the skillet with the chicken.
  • Cook for another 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the asparagus becomes tender but still retains a slight crunch.
  • The asparagus should remain bright green rather than becoming overly soft.

Step 5: Add the sauce

  • Reduce the heat to low.
  • Pour the prepared honey garlic sauce over the chicken and asparagus.
  • Stir gently to coat everything evenly, scraping the bottom of the skillet to release the flavorful browned bits.
  • Allow the mixture to simmer for 1–2 minutes so the flavors can combine.
  • At this stage, your Turmeric Black Pepper Chicken should have a beautiful golden color and a fragrant, sweet-savory aroma.

Step 6: Thicken the sauce

  • In a small bowl, whisk together the water and cornstarch until completely smooth.
  • Slowly pour the cornstarch slurry into the skillet while stirring.
  • Allow the sauce to simmer briefly until it thickens into a glossy glaze that coats the chicken and asparagus.
  • If the sauce becomes too thick, add a small splash of water until it reaches your preferred consistency.

Step 7: Serve and enjoy

  • Remove the skillet from the heat.
  • Serve immediately over steamed rice, brown rice, quinoa, or your favorite grain.
  • Spoon any remaining honey garlic sauce over the top for extra flavor.

Notes

Chicken substitutions
Chicken thighs can replace chicken breast for a richer and slightly juicier result.
For the best texture, use boneless, skinless thighs and cut them into evenly sized pieces.
Vegetable variations
Asparagus works beautifully in this recipe, but you can also use broccoli florets, green beans, zucchini, or sliced bell peppers.
Adjust the cooking time depending on the vegetable.
Gluten-free option
Replace the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend or cornstarch.
Use certified gluten-free tamari instead of regular soy sauce.
Serving suggestions
This healthy chicken dinner pairs wonderfully with:
  • Steamed jasmine rice
  • Brown rice
  • Quinoa
  • Cauliflower rice
  • Rice noodles
  • A simple cucumber salad
For an extra burst of freshness, garnish with chopped cilantro, sliced green onions, or a squeeze of lime juice.
