Cuisine American
- 1 pound fresh strawberries rinsed, hulled, and halved or quartered
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Add the strawberries and granulated sugar to a medium saucepan.
In a small bowl, whisk together the lemon juice, vanilla extract, and cornstarch until completely smooth.
Pour the cornstarch mixture over the strawberries and stir well to coat.
Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
Reduce the heat to medium and simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the strawberries soften and the juices begin to thicken.
For a chunkier Homemade Strawberry Sauce, leave the berries mostly intact. For a smoother consistency, gently mash the berries with a spoon or blend the sauce after cooking.
Remove from the heat and allow the sauce to cool slightly.
Serve warm, at room temperature, or chilled.
- Frozen strawberries can be substituted when fresh berries aren't in season; simply increase the cooking time by a few minutes.
- Blend the finished sauce for an extra-smooth consistency.
- Adjust the sugar depending on the sweetness of your strawberries.
- This sauce pairs wonderfully with pancakes, waffles, cheesecake, yogurt, ice cream, French toast, oatmeal, and pound cake.
