Ingredients

  • 2 medium yellow onions sliced
  • 26 ounces frozen halal beef meatballs
  • 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
  • 1 ounce brown gravy mix halal-friendly
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 1/2 cups Gruyère cheese grated

Instructions

  • Arrange the sliced yellow onions evenly across the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker.
  • Add the frozen beef meatballs directly over the onions.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the beef broth, brown gravy mix, minced garlic, black pepper, dried thyme, and white wine vinegar until well combined.
  • Pour the broth mixture evenly over the onions and meatballs.
  • Cover the slow cooker and cook on HIGH for 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours or LOW for 5 to 6 hours, until the onions are tender and the meatballs are thoroughly heated.
  • In a small bowl, whisk the water and cornstarch together until completely smooth.
  • Pour the cornstarch slurry into the slow cooker. Gently stir so the sauce coats the Crock Pot French Onion Meatballs evenly.
  • Sprinkle the grated Gruyère cheese over the meatballs. Cover and continue cooking for about 10 minutes, or until the cheese is completely melted.
  • Serve hot over mashed potatoes or rice with plenty of the rich onion gravy spooned over the top.

Notes

Swiss cheese can replace Gruyère for a similar mild, nutty flavor. For an extra-cheesy finish, use a combination of Gruyère and mozzarella.
Serve these easy crock pot meatballs over creamy mashed potatoes, steamed rice, buttered noodles, or pasta. Crusty bread is another delicious option because it can soak up the savory onion gravy.
For a complete meal, pair the meatballs with steamed green beans, roasted broccoli, asparagus, or a simple green salad.
